The competition, organized by Severn Trent, the University of Nottingham (UoN), and Nottingham Trent University (NTU), has sparked a creative frenzy. Students from both institutions were challenged to envision a new structure that would honor the sentiment of the original love locks while offering a fresh, functional experience for the public. One of the standout features of this project is the emphasis on community engagement. Alex Tullett, a Nottinghamshire resident and member of the judging panel, highlights the thoughtful consideration given to the public's interaction with the new structures. "As someone who enjoys river walks, I can envision these designs enhancing the area beautifully."

Lucelia Rodrigues, Head of Architecture & Built Environment at UoN, praises the entries for their ability to capture the essence of love and memory while seamlessly integrating the new structures into the existing environment. "The students have a deep understanding of the place and its history," she notes. "Their designs not only preserve the sentiment of the locks but also create a comfortable and welcoming space for the community."
The collaboration between the universities has been a resounding success, according to Dr. Lois Woods, Course Leader for BArch Architecture at NTU. "The LoveLocks design competition has been an incredible learning experience for our students," she says. "They've demonstrated their creativity and problem-solving skills, and the resulting designs are truly impressive. This project has not only fostered innovation but also contributed to the social sustainability and well-being of the local community."
